Bursaries

  • Students may be considered for the following bursaries by completing the general bursary application. Only one application is necessary to be considered for all bursaries.

 

The Erna Beltsheva Bursary in Music

Value: Varies | Number: Varies

One or more bursaries are awarded to students in the School of Music. Preference will be given to students who can competently perform Chopin's Etudes and Ballades.

 

The George Jennings Burnett Memorial Bursary

Value: $700 | Number: 1

An award of $700 is made annually to a student specialising in organ or composition in a Bachelor of Music program. Preference will be given to a student who needs financial assistance to continue in the program.

 

The Henry, Annie and Harry Cathcart Bursary Fund

Value: $3,000 | Number: Varies

A number of bursaries, worth a minimum of $3,000 each, are awarded to graduate or undergraduate students in the School of Music. Where practical two-thirds of the bursaries are to be awarded to students whose principal instrument is piano, and one-third of the bursaries are to be awarded to students whose principal instrument is violin, viola, or cello. Preference will be given first to graduate or undergraduate students entering the School of Music, and second to
students proceeding to their second or third year of studies in the School of Music.

 

The Cliff-Marcel Bursaries

One or more bursaries are given to students entering their second, third or fourth year in the School of Music. Preference will be given to students having a specific interest in the violin.

 

The Thomas Henry (Harry) and Doris Collom Bursary

Value: Varies | Number: 3 minimum

Three or more bursaries will be awarded to students entering second or third year in music. If there are insufficient qualified music students, bursaries will be awarded to second or third year science students. Preference will be given to students born in British Columbia or the United Kingdom.

 

Joseph Patrick Cunningham Memorial Bursary

Value: Varies | Number: 1

A bursary is awarded to a third or fourth year student in the Bachelor of Music program whose principal instrument is either the harp or violin.

 

The Glenn and Mary Daugharty Bursary in Music

Value: Varies | Number: 1

An award will be made annually to a student in the Bachelor of Music program.

 

The Howard & Donna Denike Memorial Bursary

Value: Varies | Number: Varies

One or more bursaries are awarded to students entering 2nd, 3rd and 4th year of the Bachelor of Music program or the Bachelor of Education program in Secondary Instrumental Music.

 

Kathleen Farthing, Martlet Chapter, IODE Bursary

Value: $1000 | Number: Varies

A bursary of $1000 is awarded to a student in any of the performing arts in the Faculty of Fine Arts. This is a one time award for the year 2007.

A bursary is awarded to a continuing student in the Bachelor of Music program who is specializing in any instrument.

 

The James B. Kennedy Memorial Bursary

A bursary is awarded to a student entering or continuing in the School of Music whose principal instrument is flute, oboe, bassoon or recorder.

 

Harold & Lorna Knight Music Bursary

One or more bursaries are awarded to 3rd or 4th year students in the School of Music program.

 

Paul Gregory Kuss Memorial Bursary

Value: $150 | Number: 1

A bursary of $150 is awarded annually to a newly admitted or returning Music student.

 

Eileen MacFarlane Bursary in Voice

Value: $1,500 | Number: 1

A bursary of $1,500 is awarded to a student entering or continuing in the School of Music who is specializing in voice.

 

The Florence Gertrude McConnell Bursary in Music

Value: Varies | Number: Varies

One or more bursaries are awarded to students in the School of Music. Preference will be given to a Roman Catholic student interested in the liturgy of the Roman Catholic Church.

 

The Bernard Naylor Memorial Bursary in Music

Value: $400 | Number: 1

Up to $400 is awarded annually to a student in the School of Music who shows evidence ofoutstanding performance in the University Chorus.

 

The Odynsky Bursaries in Music

Value: $750 | Number: 2

Two bursaries of $750 each are awarded to entering or continuing students in the Bachelor of Music program who are specializing in any instrument.

 

The Odynsky Bursaries in VoiceValue: $750 | Number: 2

Two bursaries of $750 each are awarded to entering or continuing students in the Bachelor of Music program who are specializing in voice performance.

 

The Evelyn Packham Bursaries in Music

One or more bursaries are awarded to students entering or continuing in the School of Music.

 

Matthew Prentice Bursary

Value: Varies | Number: Varies

One or more bursaries are awarded to students entering or continuing in the Bachelor of Music Program, and whose performance area is brass, piano or voice.

 

The St. Jude Bursary

Value: Varies | Number: Varies

One or more awards are made annually to student(s) pursuing a Bachelor of Music degree with a performance major in voice. The student(s) must demonstrate financial need and display vocal and academic excellence. The recipients must be newly admitted or returning students.

 

The Norval Schroeder Bursary

Value: $1,200 | Number: 1

A bursary of $1,200, or such higher value as the donor may determine, will be awarded annually to a deserving student of an orchestral instrument in any year of the Bachelor of Music program.

Entrance

Requires Entrance Scholarship Application

A completed online application is required for Entrance Scholarships listed in this section. The deadline, unless stated otherwise in the Terms of Awards, is May 15th. Only one application is necessary to be considered for all Entrance Scholarships.

 

ADASKIN ENDOWMENT FOR STRINGS - 1 or more totalling $1625

Scholarships are awarded to students entering or continuing in a Bachelor of Music program whose principal instrument is violin, viola, cello or double bass.

 

EMILY APINIS-GRUNDSTEIN SCHOLARSHIP - 1 or more totalling $3000

Scholarships are awarded to students entering or continuing in programs in the Department of Visual Arts or the School of Music.

 

JOAN BACKUS SCHOLARSHIP IN MUSIC

One or more scholarships are awarded to outstanding full-time undergraduate or graduate students entering or continuing in the School of Music. Selection of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards or the Graduate Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the School of Music.

 

THE RALPH BARBOUR BURRY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS IN MUSIC - 3 @ $875

Scholarships in varying amounts (minimum award, $800) are awarded annually to students in the School of Music. Preference will be given to entering students in any year. The awards will be based on excellence in music. In the case of two equally gifted candidates, need will be the determining factor.

 

BEULAH DANIELS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP IN MUSIC - 1 @ $1,000

A scholarship is awarded to a student entering or continuing in the School of Music. A continuing student must have completed a minimum of 12 units in the preceding winter session.

ADELE DUNSMORE NESMITH ENTRANCE SCHOLARSHIP IN VOICE - 1 @ $775

A scholarship is awarded to a student whose performance area is voice and who is entering the School of Music at the University of Victoria from a British Columbia secondary school or regional college. Preference will be given to a student who can demonstrate financial need.

RICHARD ELY SCHOLARSHIP - 1 or more

Scholarships are awarded to undergraduate students entering or continuing in the School of Music who demonstrates performance excellence and whose principal instrument is the horn.

HERTA HARTMANSHENN SCHOLARSHIP IN MUSIC - 1 or more totalling $1400

Scholarships are awarded to students entering or continuing in the School of Music.

 

WILLARD E. IRELAND ENTRANCE SCHOLARSHIP - 1 @ approximately $1425

A scholarship will be awarded annually to an outstanding student entering the School of Music at the University of Victoria

BETTY AND GILBERT KENNEDY SCHOLARSHIP IN MUSIC - 1 @ $2,200

A scholarship is awarded to a student entering or continuing in the School of Music in any performance area.

 

THE LAFAYETTE STRING QUARTET SCHOLARSHIP - 1 @ $1,500

A scholarship is awarded in memory of cellist Noble Minor to an outstanding violin, viola or cello student who displays excellence as a chamber musician and is registered in the Bachelor of Music program. The recipient may be a newly admitted or a returning student.

 

THE EVELYN MARCHANT MacLAURIN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS IN MUSIC - 1 or more totalling $3,000

Scholarships of at least $800 each are awarded annually to outstanding students pursuing a degree in Music. Preference will be given to newly admitted students entering the School of Music. In the case of an undergraduate award, selection of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the School of Music. In the case of a graduate award, selection of the recipient will be made by the Graduate Admissions and Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the School of Music.

 

OLIVE, MARY & CLAUDE McGREGOR SCHOLARSHIPS IN MUSIC - 1 or more totalling $2,000

Scholarships are awarded to students entering or continuing in a program in the School of Music. Preference will be given to citizens of the United States of America. In the case of an undergraduate scholarship, selection of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the School of Music. In the case of a graduate scholarship, selection of the recipients will be made by the Graduate Admissions and Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the School of Music.

 

PERFORMANCE SCHOLARSHIP IN MUSIC - 1 @ $1225

One award is made annually to a student for outstanding achievement in performance. The recipient may be newly admitted or a returning student. Selection will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the School of Music’s Performance faculty.

 

RAY AND SHEILA PROTTI MUSIC SCHOLARSHIPS – 1 or more totaling $3000

One or more scholarships totaling $3000 are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students entering or continuing in the School of Music.

 

WILL AND MARY ROOK SCHOLARSHIP IN MUSIC - Value to be determined

A scholarship is awarded to a student entering or continuing in the School of Music.

 

THE DOUGLAS ROSS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - 1 @ $425

An award is made annually to a student for outstanding achievement in piano performance. The recipient may be a new or a returning student in the School of Music.

 

THE HERBERT & EVA SCHAEFER STRING SCHOLARSHIP - 1 or more totalling $2750

Scholarships are awarded to outstanding students of violin, viola, cello or double bass, entering or continuing in the Music program at either the undergraduate or graduate level. Selection will be made by either the Senate Committee on Awards or the Graduate Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the School of Music.

 

DAISIE THIRLWALL SCHOLARSHIPS IN VIOLIN - Up to 3 totalling $1,000

Scholarships in varying amounts are awarded annually to gifted violinists who demonstrate excellence or potential in performance and who are registered in the Bachelor of Music program. Preference will be given to newly admitted students. In the event there are no qualified violinists in any given year, other string instrumentalists will be considered. In the case of equally qualified candidates, need shall be the determining factor.

 

VICTORIA CHAMBER ORCHESTRA SCHOLARSHIP - 1 or more totalling $1,000

Scholarships are awarded to students entering or continuing in an undergraduate or graduate program in the School of Music whose principal instrument is violin, viola, cello, or double bass. Selection will be made by either the Senate Committee on Awards or the Graduate Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the School of Music.

 

DR. JOHN S. WILLIS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - 1 or more

Scholarships are awarded to undergraduate and graduate students entering or continuing in the School of Music who are studying the violin, viola or cello. Selection of the recipient of an undergraduate award is made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the School of Music. Selection of the recipient of a graduate award is made by the Graduate Admissions and Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the School of Music.

 

In-Course

 

The following awards require application through the School of Music; review the eligibility criteria and application instructions indicated below.

 

These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals and prizes.Scholarships marked with an asterisk (*) are administered by the University of Victoria Foundation.

 

*JOHANN STRAUSS FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS

Two scholarships, of $3000 each are awarded to assist undergraduate or graduate students registered in the School of Music to study music in Austria. At least one of these two annual scholarships must be for study at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. Applicants must be Canadian citizens or landed immigrants and must provide documentation demonstrating the applicant’s registration at an acceptable institution. An audition is required. Graduating students are also eligible for this award. Details of criteria and application forms are available at the School of Music. Applications must be submitted to the School of Music by January 10 of the academic year of the proposed study in Austria. In the case of an undergraduate student, selection of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the School of Music. In the case of a graduate student, selection will be made by the Graduate Admissions and Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the School of Music. *JOHANN STRAUSS FOUNDATION - JOSEPH AND MELITTA KANDLER SCHOLARSHIPS

Supplemental scholarships may be awarded to the undergraduate or graduate recipients of the Johann Strauss Foundation Scholarships.
Note: Separate application NOT required. Recipients of the Johann Strauss Foundation Scholarships are also considered for this scholarship.

* THE HARRY AND FRANCES MARR ADASKIN SCHOLARSHIP IN MUSIC HISTORY

A scholarship of $300 is awarded in honour of these distinguished Canadian musicians by Miss Rivkah Isaacs. The scholarship is awarded to an outstanding music history major entering the final year of undergraduate study and planning to go on to graduate study in musicology. In the case of two equally gifted candidates, need is to be the determining factor. Selection of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the faculty members of the School of Music.

 

Blue book icon * THE MURRAY ADASKIN PRIZE IN MUSIC COMPOSITION

A prize is awarded to an outstanding student in music composition. The recipient may not receive this award in two successive years.

Given in memory of Margaret and Harold Beckwith by the family. Awarded to a graduating Bachelor of Music student for excellence in music.

 

*JOYCE AND DON BRAKE SCHOLARSHIP IN MUSIC

One or more scholarships are awarded to students studying piano in the School of Music.

 

* THE DOROTHY BUCHSEIN PRIZE IN PIANO

A prize of $400 is awarded to a first year student enrolled in individual tuition in piano who best demonstrates enthusiasm and determination in mastering the instrument.

Three scholarships in varying amounts (minimum award, $800) are awarded to students in the School of Music. Preference will be given to entering students in any year. * BEULAH DANIELS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP IN MUSIC

A scholarship of $1000 is awarded to a student entering or continuing in the School of Music. A continuing student must have completed a minimum of 12 units in the preceding winter session.

 

LOMA CORNWELL DAVIS SCHOLARSHIP

 

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students in their third or fourth year in the Bachelor of Music program. Preference will be given to students studying voice.

 

* THE GERTRUDE HUNTLY DURAND MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

A scholarship of $675 is awarded to a piano student in any year in the School of Music who has demonstrated potential in areas of accompanying or teaching.

 

* RICHARD ELY SCHOLARSHIP

One or more scholarships are awarded to undergraduate students entering or continuing in the School of Music who demonstrates performance excellence and whose principal instrument is the horn.

 

* LOTTIE FEW MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP IN MUSIC

A scholarship of $300 is awarded to a student of outstanding musicianship in the Bachelor of Music program whose principal instrument is piano, violin, viola, or cello.

 

* FLETCHER PIANO SCHOLARSHIP

A scholarship of $475 is awarded to an outstanding student, in any year of the Bachelor of Music program, whose principal instrument is the piano.

 

* MARGARET GOATER SCHOLARSHIP IN STRINGS

A scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student in the Bachelor of Music program whose principal instrument is violin, viola or cello.

 

* ELEANOR GRAY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP IN MUSIC

One or more scholarships are awarded to students studying piano or voice in the School of Music.

 

* THE IDA HALPERN MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP

A scholarship is awarded to a student entering third or fourth year of study towards the Bachelor of Music degree. Preference will be given to a student with an interest in first nations music of the West Coast.

 

* THE JUDITH HARREMAN SCHOLARSHIP IN MUSIC

A scholarship of $850 is awarded by the Canadian Federation of University Women Victoria to an outstanding female student proceeding to year 3 or 4 in the Music program. Preference will be given to a student specializing in voice or piano.

 

* HERTA HARTMANSHENN SCHOLARSHIP IN MUSIC

One or more scholarships are awarded to students entering or continuing in the School of Music.

 

* WILLIAM ROSS HOLM SCHOLARSHIP IN MUSIC

A scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student in music composition in the School of Music. In the case of an undergraduate student, selection will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the School of Music. In the case of a graduate student, selection of the recipient will be made by the Graduate Admissions and Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the School of Music.

 

* THE DR. AND MRS. W. CLARKE HORNING MEMORIAL PRIZE IN MUSIC/ THE HORNING MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS IN MUSIC

A prize of at least $1050 and three scholarships of $1050 each are awarded to promising composers, performers, teachers and scholars completing their third year of studies in the School of Music. Each of the four sections - Composition, Performance, Music Education and Music History, will nominate their most promising student. Selection of the Prize winner and Scholarship winners will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards on the recommendation of the Scholarship Committee of the School of Music.

 

* BETTY AND GILBERT KENNEDY SCHOLARSHIP IN MUSIC

A scholarship is awarded to a student entering or continuing in the School of Music in any performance area.

* THE REBECCA AND ESTHER LAZARUS SCHOLARSHIPS IN MUSIC

Two scholarships of $225 each are made available by Miss Rivkah Isaacs for outstanding performers entering the third or fourth year of the University music program. One is to be given to a singer in memory of Rebecca Lazarus Isaacs, and the other is to be given to a pianist in memory of Esther Lazarus Levy. In the case of two equally gifted candidates for either or both of the above, need is to be the determining factor. Selection of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendations of the faculty members of the School of Music.

 

* LONGTON SCHOLARSHIP

A scholarship is awarded to an academically outstanding undergraduate student of a stringed instrument in the School of Music.

 

* THE EVELYN MARCHANT MACLAURIN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS IN MUSIC

One or more scholarships of at least $800 each are awarded to outstanding students pursuing a degree in Music. Preference will be given to newly admitted students entering the School of Music. In the case of an undergraduate award, selection of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the School of Music. In the case of a graduate award, selection of the recipient will be made by the Graduate Admissions and Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the School of Music.

 

* IAN MCDOUGALL SCHOLARSHIP IN JAZZ

One or more scholarships are awarded to students in the Bachelor of Music program who demonstrate interest and talent in the area of jazz. If there are no eligible students in jazz, then the award is to be given to a promising trombonist or brass player.

 

* OLIVE, MARY & CLAUDE MCGREGOR SCHOLARSHIPS IN MUSIC

One or more scholarships are awarded to students entering or continuing in a program in the School of Music. Preference will be given to citizens of the United States of America. In the case of an undergraduate scholarship, selection of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the School of Music. In the case of a graduate scholarship, selection of the recipients will be made by the Graduate Admissions and Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the School of Music.

 

* BRUCE AND CONNIE MORE CHORAL MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students in the School of Music who are studying voice performance or choral conducting.

 

* THE NADEN BAND OF MARITIME FORCES PACIFIC SCHOLARSHIP IN MUSIC PERFORMANCE

Up to three scholarships in equal amounts are awarded to students entering second or third year in the School of Music who demonstrate excellence in or potential in performance as instrumentalists in the areas of brass, woodwind, or percussion.

 

* EDWARD PHILIP OSCAPELLA SCHOLARSHIP IN MUSIC

A scholarship is awarded to a student entering a Major in Performance in the School of Music. Preference will be give to students of piano or violin.

 

* PERFORMANCE SCHOLARSHIP IN MUSIC

One or more scholarships are awarded to student(s) for outstanding achievement in performance. The recipients may be newly admitted or returning students. Selection will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the School of Music's Performance faculty.

 

RAY AND SHEILA PROTTI MUSIC SCHOLARSHIPS – 1 or more totaling $3000

One or more scholarships totaling $3000 are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students entering or continuing in the School of Music.

 

* THE PAULA RENNING AND ERIC H. RENNING SCHOLARSHIP

A scholarship of $725 is awarded to a student attending the University of Victoria and majoring in Music.

 

* WILL AND MARY ROOK SCHOLARSHIP IN MUSIC

A scholarship is awarded to a student entering or continuing in the School of Music.

 

* THE DOUGLAS ROSS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

A scholarship of $425 is awarded to a student for outstanding achievement in piano performance. The recipient may be a new or a returning student in the School of Music.

 

* THE HERBERT AND EVA SCHAEFER STRING SCHOLARSHIP

One or more tuition scholarships are awarded to outstanding students of violin, viola, cello or double bass, entering or continuing in the Music program at either the undergraduate or graduate level. Selection will be made by either the Senate Committee on Awards or the Graduate Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the School of Music.

 

* SCHOOL OF MUSIC FACULTY STRING AWARDS

Awards made on the recommendation of the School of Music faculty, subject to approval by the Senate Committee on Awards, given annually or as funds permit to outstanding violinists, violists, cellists, or double bassists, in recognition of performance ability. In cases of equal performance skill, need should be the determining factor. The awards are named in recognition of School of Music faculty who made personal contributions to inaugurate this fund, but it is further supplemented through proceeds from scholarship concerts and other sources. The number and size of such awards will be determined annually by the School faculty.

 

BEA SCOTT SCHOLARSHIP IN VOICE

One or more scholarships are awarded to undergraduate or graduate students in the music program and whose principal instrument is voice.

 

MARY M. & ERICH P. SCHWANDT SCHOLARSHIPS

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students entering or continuing in the School of Music.

 

* AUDREY ST. DENYS and M.E. JOHNSON SCHOLARSHIPS

One or more scholarships are awarded to undergraduate or graduate students in Faculty of Fine Arts.

 

* GRACE SWANNELL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP IN PIANO

One or more scholarships are awarded to students studying piano in the School of Music.

 

* THE TAYLOR SCHOLARSHIP IN MUSIC

A scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student in any year of study for the Bachelor of Music degree. The scholarship is presented in honour of Dr. M.G. Taylor, the first President of the University of Victoria, and Mrs. Taylor, and is administered by the University of Victoria Foundation. If funds permit, additional scholarships may be made.

 

THE DAISIE THIRLWALL SCHOLARSHIPS IN VIOLIN

Up to three scholarships in varying amounts are awarded annually to gifted violinists who demonstrate excellence or potential in performance and who are registered in the Bachelor of Music program. Preference will be given to newly admitted students. In the event there are no qualified violinists in any given year, other string instrumentalists will be considered. In the case of equally qualified candidates, need shall be the determining factor.

 

VICTORIA CHAMBER ORCHESTRA SCHOLARSHIP

One or more scholarships are awarded to students entering or continuing in an undergraduate or graduate program in the School of Music whose principal instrument is violin, viola, cello, or double bass. In the case of a graduate award, selection will be made by the Graduate Admissions and Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the School of Music.

 

* THE VICTORIA JAZZ SOCIETY SCHOLARSHIP

A scholarship is awarded to a student in the Bachelor of Music Program who has demonstrated excellence in jazz.

 

* VICTORIA MUSICAL ARTS SOCIETY SCHOLARSHIP

A scholarship of not less than $1000 is awarded to an outstanding performer in his or her third (or second-to-last) year in the School of Music intending to pursue a career in music. The student must have been a resident of the Greater Victoria area for at least two years and not have been a previous recipient of the award.

 

* DR. JOHN S. WILLIS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

One or more scholarships are awarded to undergraduate and graduate students entering or continuing in the School of Music who are studying the violin, viola or cello. Selection of the recipient of an undergraduate award is made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the School of Music. Selection of the recipient of a graduate award is made by the Graduate Admissions and Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the School of Music.

 

* PHILLIP T. YOUNG MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

One or more scholarships are awarded to students of woodwind instruments in the BMus program in the School of Music. Preference will be given to students of double reed instruments.
