Awards, Bursaries and Scholarships in Chemistry

Bursaries

  • Students may be considered for the following bursaries by completing the general bursary application. Only one application is necessary to be considered for all bursaries.

 

The Chaney Fund

Value: Varies | Number: Varies

One or more bursaries are awarded to undergraduate students entering their fourth year in the Department of Chemistry. These students must have completed their third year at the University of Victoria.

Gerhart B. Friedmann Bursary

Value: Varies | Number: Varies

One or more bursaries are awarded annually to a student entering year 2 or 3 of an Honours or Major program in the Departments of Biochemistry and Microbiology, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Statistics, and Physics and Astronomy.

Applications from students are NOT required for scholarships listed in this section.

Unless otherwise indicated, recipients are selected by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendations of the Chemistry department.

These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals and prizes.

Scholarships marked with an asterisk (*) are administered by the University of Victoria Foundation.

 

*NORAH AND CALVIN BANKS CHEMISTRY SCHOLARSHIP

A scholarship is awarded to an academically outstanding undergraduate student entering 3rd year in a Major or Honours program in the Department of Chemistry.

 

CHEMISTRY CO-OP REPORT PRIZES

One prize of $300, a second prize of $200 and a third prize of $100 are awarded at the end of each four month work term period to the students in the Chemistry Co-op Program who complete the three best Chemistry Co-op Work Term reports. The requirement that the prize recipients must return to the University of Victoria in the next regular session and must enroll in a full program does not apply to these prizes. Selections are made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendations of the Chemistry Co-op Committee.

 

*CHEMISTRY STUDENTS’ SOCIETY 2002 ALUMNI AWARD

A book prize is awarded to a third or fourth year student majoring in Chemistry. Students must have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement in both the laboratory and lecture components or shown the greatest improvement in both these components.

* THE KAREL HARTMAN SCHOLARSHIP

A scholarship is awarded to a promising and deserving student in the Department of Chemistry who demonstrates interest in the area of analytical or instrumental chemistry.

 

* THE CHARLES HUMPHREY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP IN CHEMISTRY

A scholarship of $1250 is awarded to an outstanding student proceeding to year 3 or 4 of an Honours or Major program.

 

* B.W. PEARSE SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIPS

Four scholarships are awarded to third or fourth year students in an Honours or Majors program in the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Statistics and Physics and Astronomy.

 

*GERRY POULTON SCHOLARSHIP

 

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students in third or fourth year chemistry who are enrolled in the Honours or Major program and who have shown outstanding capabilities in organic chemistry.

 

 

* THE JOHN F. REEVES MEMORIAL AWARD

An award of $1025 is offered to the student in the Chemistry Coop Program who, during a work term, is judged to have made the most outstanding contribution to the student's employer in the field of Chemistry. The recipient of the award should clearly have demonstrated some distinction in his work term performance. Candidates must be nominated for the award by their employer and the nominations will be assessed by a committee composed of two representatives of employers participating in the Chemistry Coop Program chosen by the Chemistry Department and two members of the Chemistry Department. Selection of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the committee. The requirement that the award winner must return to the University of Victoria in the next regular session and must enrol in a full program does not apply to this award.

* THE STEPHEN A. RYCE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

A scholarship of $975 is awarded to an outstanding student in third year Chemistry who plans to complete a degree in
Chemistry at the University of Victoria. Selection of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Awards Committee of the Department of Chemistry. The award is in memory of Dr. Stephen A. Ryce who was a member of the Chemistry Department for many years.

* THE HUGH AND LILIAN SALMOND SCHOLARSHIPS IN CHEMISTRY

A scholarship of $930 and another of $645 are awarded to students in an Honours or Major program in the Department of Chemistry who have devised or contributed to a concept or procedure which applies chemistry to the improvement of the health of the environment or of its inhabitants.

* THE HUGH AND LILIAN SALMOND SCHOLARSHIP IN CHEMISTRY OF THE ENVIRONMENT

A scholarship of $725 is awarded to a student who combines an Honours or Major in Chemistry with an Honours, Major or Minor in another discipline, and who has demonstrated an interest in the health of the environment or of its inhabitants.

SEASPAN INTERNATIONAL LTD. SCHOLARSHIP

A scholarship of $500 is awarded to the student leading courses numbered 200 in any two of the following departments:
Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Mathematics, Physics. The winner must continue academic work at an approved university.
