Bursaries

  • Students may be considered for the following bursaries by completing the general bursary application. Only one application is necessary to be considered for all bursaries.

 

JOHN CARLING FRASER MEMORIAL BURSARY blue book icon

Value: Varies | Number: Varies

Two or more bursaries with a total value of $5000 are awarded to 3rd or 4th year students in the Faculty of Science who have declared a major in Biology, Biochemistry or Microbiology. Preference will be given to students who are active in student politics and/or volunteer work with youth groups in the community, especially Scouts Canada.

GERHART B. FRIEDMANN BURSARY

Value: Varies | Number: Varies

One or more bursaries are awarded annually to a student entering year 2 or 3 of an Honours or Major program in the Departments of Biochemistry and Microbiology, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Statistics, and Physics and Astronomy.

THE ALLEN P. JAMES BURSARY

Value: Varies | Number: Varies

One or more bursaries are awarded to students entering year 4 programs offered by the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology or the Department of Biology.

THE ADA AND ROBERT LE GRYS MEMORIAL BURSARY IN BIOCHEMISTRY AND/OR MICROBIOLOGY

Value: $600 | Number: 1

A bursary of $600 is awarded annually, on the basis of financial need and academic performance, to a student participating in a major or honours program in Biochemistry and/or Microbiology which bears on human conditions - with special emphasis on human nutritional requirements and related subjects.

THE HUGH AND LILIAN SALMOND BURSARIES IN BIOCHEMISTRY AND/OR MICROBIOLOGY

Value: $750 | Number: 2

Two awards of $750 each are made annually, on the basis of financial need and academic performance, to students participating in majors or honours programs in biochemistry and/or microbiology which bear on the human conditions: (1) such as respiratory diseases - particularly asthma, bronchial asthma, etc. and (2) with special emphasis on the body's immune system and allergic reactions.

THE JANE SEABORNE BURSARY

Value: Varies | Number: Varies

One or more bursaries are awarded to female students in a major or honours program inBiology, Biochemistry and Microbiology, Chemistry, Earth and Ocean Sciences, or Physics and Astronomy. Preference will be given to students who are involved in intramural sports.

THE DR. ERNST VON RUDLOFF BURSARY IN BIOCHEMISTRY

Value: $800 | Number: 1

An award of $800 is made annually to a student beginning year 3 or 4 of a major or honours program in Biochemistry. The award is open to all students in this program, especially those interested in plant biochemistry. The award will be based on academic standing and financial need.

Awards that Require the In-Course Scholarship Application

Applications are required for In-Course Scholarships listed in this section. The deadline, unless stated otherwise is May 31.

These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals and prizes.

Scholarships marked with an asterisk (*) are administered by the University of Victoria Foundation.

 

* JOHN CARLING FRASER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS blue book icon

Two scholarships of $2500 each are awarded to 3rd or 4th year students in the Faculty of Science, with a declared major in Biology, Microbiology or Biochemistry. Preference will be given to students who are active in student politics and/or volunteer work with youth groups in the community, especially Scouts Canada. Students should submit a letter or resume as part of their application in which they describe their contributions to such volunteer/youth organizations.

* EDYTHE HEMBROFF-SCHLEICHER SCHOLARSHIPS

One or more scholarships are awarded to undergraduate or graduate female students registered in pre-medicine disciplines, for example Biochemistry and Microbiology, Biology or Chemistry. Preference will be given to students who have stated an intention to continue on to medical school. Selection of the graduate recipients will be made by the Graduate Admissions and Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the appropriate departments. Selection of the undergraduate recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards.

 

Awards Where No Application Is Required

Applications from students are NOT required for scholarships listed in this section.

Unless otherwise indicated in the Terms of Awards, recipients are selected by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendations of the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology.

These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals and prizes.

DEPARTMENT OF BIOCHEMISTRY AND MICROBIOLOGY SCHOLARSHIP

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students in 3rd or 4th year who have demonstrated involvement in student activities at the University of Victoria.

 

THE TERRY FOX SCHOLARSHIP

A scholarship of $1000 is awarded by the Victoria Real Estate Board to an outstanding student who is in the third year of a program of Biochemistry and Microbiology and who has indicated an interest in the area of cancer research. This award is also tenable at a medical school.

* THE CHARLES HUMPHREY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP IN MICROBIOLOGY


A scholarship of $1250 is awarded to an outstanding student proceeding to year 3 or 4 of an Honours or Major program.
Selection of the recipient is made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of
Biochemistry and Microbiology.

* THE ADA AND ROBERT LE GRYS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP IN BIOCHEMISTRY AND/OR MICROBIOLOGY


A scholarship of $850 is awarded to a student in an Honours or Major program in Biochemistry and/or Microbiology who has devised or contributed to a concept or procedure promoting good physical health.

* THE HUGH AND LILIAN SALMOND BIOCHEMISTRY AND/OR MICROBIOLOGY SCHOLARSHIP


A scholarship of $1050 is awarded to a student in an Honours or Major program in Biochemistry and/or Microbiology who has devised or contributed to a concept or procedure promoting good physical health.
