This section is specifically for Student Athletes.
Please note that CIAU regulations stipulate that students must have a minimum GPA of 80% to receive an Athletic Award in their entering year.
If you are a returning student, eligibility requirements stipulate that returning students must have passed a minimum of 9.0 units the preceding academic year and that no combination of athletic awards and/or bursaries may exceed $1,500 per year.
Generally, a student who has completed a general bursary application will be considered for all applicable awards. For those exceptional entries which indicate that a separate application is necessary, those forms will be available directly from your coach in Athletics and Recreation.
Applications must be returned to the appropriate office by the deadline, both of which are located on the application forms.

Deadline is November 15th (subject to change- please check with your coach). Achievement Awards recognize undergraduate students who have demonstrated outstanding commitment to the pursuit of excellence in their endeavours. Fine arts, athletics, and other areas where individual expression becomes public are recognized through these awards. Recipients must have demonstrated financial need and a minimum 3.5 sessional grade point average for students continuing at or transferring to UVic, or a 70% admission average for students commencing postsecondary studies for the first time. Athletics coaches will distribute application forms to prospective students, who will complete and return them to Student Awards & Financial Aid.

One or more awards are available to students entering the University of Victoria who have demonstrated excellence in extramural athletics. Male or female students competing in basketball, soccer, volleyball, swimming, cross country, middle distance, rowing or men's rugby and women's field hockey must be registered in nine (9) units the year in which they receive the award.
James McRae Award in Rowing

One or more awards are given to undergraduate or graduate students who compete in the men’s or women’s 8 varsity rowing team. Eligible students must meet all Canadian Inter-university Sport (CIS) eligibility requirements. Award recipients will be selected on the basis of work ethic, commitment and performance criteria by the Varsity Head Coach, the Coordinator of Athletics and the Coach of the Under-19 Men’s National Rugby Team.

Ken & Kathy Shields Basketball Award
One award of equal value shall be awarded annually to both a male and female student-athlete on the Vikes Varsity Basketball teams at the University of Victoria. Eligible students must meet all CIS eligibility requirements. Award recipients will be selected on the basis of work ethic, commitment and performance criteria by the Director of Athletics and Recreation in consultation with the Varsity Head Coaches and the Coordinator of Athletics. It is expected that the recipients of this award will have an ongoing commitment to the pursuit of high standards of performance in academics and athletics.
Charlton L. Smith Golf Awards

One or more awards are available to continuing students who compete in level one Vikes Varsity Competition. The student must have successfully completed nine units in the previous academic year and must be registered in nine units the year in which they receive the award.

Eligible students must meet all CIS (Canadian Inter-university Sport) eligibility requirements. Award recipients will be selected on the basis of work ethic, commitment and performance criteria by the Director of Athletics and Recreation in consultation with the Coordinator of Athletics and head coach of the men’s and women’s varsity Cross Country/Track Team. Preference will be given to a student who attended high school in the Greater Victoria area that has been involved in the community.

A limited number of $1500 awards may be available to continuing students at the University of Victoria who have previously demonstrated excellence in inter university and/or extra mural athletics. To be eligible, students (male and female) competing in basketball, soccer, volleyball, swimming, cross country, middle distance and rowing, and in men's rugby and women's field hockey must have successfully completed at least nine (9) units the previous academic year and must be registered in nine (9) units the year in which they are to receive the award. This award is administered by Student Awards & Financial Aid in consultation with the Manager of Athletics and Recreational Services. A bursary of $500 is awarded to an undergraduate student who has completed one year in the Novice Rowing Program. The recipient will have achieved reasonable academic standing and have shown outstanding potential in the Rowing Program.
The Wilf Sadler Memorial Bursary Fund

A bursary of $500 will be allocated annual to a needy student from the Greater Victoria area who is entering the University from the secondary school system. Preference will be given to students who can demonstrate significant involvement in amateur sports. or community activity.
The Jane Seaborne Bursary

One or more bursaries are awarded to female students in a major or honours program in Biology, Biochemistry and Microbiology, Chemistry, Earth and Ocean Sciences, or Physics and Astronomy. Preference will be given to students who are involved in intermural sports.
The Darryl Smith Memorial Bursary

A bursary of $500 is awarded to an undergraduate student who has completed one year in the Novice Rowing Program. The recipient will have achieved reasonable academic standing and have shown outstanding potential in the Rowing Program.
Courtney Walls Memorial Bursary

A bursary is awarded to a student continuing at the University of Victoria and who is playing Varsity Rugby. Preference is given to a student studying English or Writing. This award is established to remember Courtney Walls who was an outstanding member of the University Rugby Team and was a graduate of the Writing program.
Walter and Charlotte Yeamens Bursary
Value: $500 maximum | Number: 2
Two bursaries of $500 each will be awarded to 2nd, 3rd or 4th year students who are participating in the men's or women's basketball program. Preference will be given to students from the Greater Victoria area who have played both community and school basketball locally. Selection will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Basketball Coaching Staff and the Athletics Department.

XV COMMONWEALTH GAMES SCHOLARSHIPS
Available only to employees of UVic or their dependents. Indicate the name and relationship of UVic employee on your application form. One or more entrance scholarships are awarded to employees of the University of Victoria or their dependents.
THE 25TH OLYMPIAD SCHOLARSHIP - 1 @ $2,000
A scholarship is awarded to a student entering the University of Victoria who has demonstrated excellence in extramural athletics while maintaining a high academic standing. Male or female students competing in basketball, soccer, volleyball, swimming, cross country running, middle distance running, rowing, men’s rugby or women’s field hockey are eligible to apply. Selection of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards in consultation with the Manager of Athletics and Recreational Services.

HUNTER FAMILY ATHLETIC AWARD

WALLY MILLIGAN SOCCER SCHOLARSHIP
One or more awards of varying amounts
One or more scholarships are awarded to students entering or continuing at the University of Victoria and who are selected as a member of the Vikes Men's Soccer team. This scholarship does NOT require application. Recipients of this award will be nominated by Athletics and Recreational Services.
THE BRIAN WILLIAMS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
*Available to applicants from Canadian secondary schools only. This scholarship does not require application. Recipients of this award will be nominated by Athletics and Recreational Services in January after completion of one term of study and participation in the Varsity Rugby program at UVic.

One or more awards of at least $500 are awarded to students entering first year who will be involved in the Varsity Rugby program. The scholarship will be awarded upon completion of one term of study at UVic. These scholarships have been funded by the Velox-Valhallians Sport Club and the University of Victoria rugby players.
