Bursaries

  • Students may be considered for the following bursaries by completing the general bursary application. Only one application is necessary to be considered for all bursaries.

 

The Scott Wallace Bursary

Value: $300 | Number: 1

A bursary of $300 will be awarded annually to a needy third year student majoring in Political Science who has demonstrated a sense of community responsibility and awareness of an obligation to serve society through active membership in various campus or community organisations. Although applications are not required for this bursary, students who consider themselves eligible for it are invited to communicate with the Chair or Secretary of the Department.

There are no Entrance Scholarships specific to Political Science

 

In-Course

  • The following scholarship(s) require students to apply directly to the Department of Political Science; review the eligibility criteria and applicaiton instructions before applying.

 

*THE WALTER D. YOUNG SCHOLARSHIP

A scholarship is awarded to a student in an honours or major program offered by the Department of Political Science. To be eligible, students must have completed between 37.5 and 51 units (inclusive) of coursework towards their degree, and at least 6 units of upper-level coursework in Political Science. The recipient will be selected by a committee after consideration of the following criteria: overall post-secondary academic performance; grades in Canadian politics courses, particularly the grades in Political Science 101 and 201 or their equivalents; and other activities undertaken at the University and in the wider community. Application forms for this scholarship are available from the Department of Political Science and must be submitted not later than March 31.
Note: The committee may require that candidates for the scholarship submit an essay or term paper written by the candidate for an upper level university course. References may be sought and an interview may be held.

 

 

In-Course Scholarship - No Application Required

 

Applications from students are NOT required for scholarships listed in this section.

Unless otherwise indicated, recipients are selected by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendations of the Department of Political Science.

These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals and prizes.

Scholarships marked with an asterisk (*) are administered by the University of Victoria Foundation.

 

* SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL SCHOLARSHIP

A scholarship is awarded to an outstanding undergraduate student in the 3rd or 4th year of a Major or Honours program in History or Political Science and who best exemplifies the character and qualities of the Right Honourable Sir Winston Spencer Churchill, with emphasis on leadership, courage, innovation, determination and magnanimity.

 

* THE LIEUTENANT-GENERAL S.F. CLARK, CBE CD SCHOLARSHIP

A scholarship of $400 is awarded to a student of high academic standing in three units of senior undergraduate or graduate course work (or equivalent) dealing with military history or defence studies given in the Department of History or the Department of Political Science. Selection of the winner will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of History or the Department of Political Science.

 

* DR. EDGAR S. EFRAT BOOK PRIZE

A prize is awarded to an outstanding student entering third or fourth year who is taking courses in Comparative Government.

 

ODESSA PRIZE IN CANADIANA

A prize of $1000 is awarded to an academically outstanding undergraduate student in the Department of Political Science who has written the best essay in an area of critical public interest to Canada. If an undergraduate student, selection will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Political Science and if a graduate student, selection will be made by the Graduate Admissions and Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the Department of Political Science.

 

JEROMY POLLARD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

A scholarship is awarded to an academically outstanding 4th year undergraduate student who is taking courses in political theory in the Department of Political Science.

 

* RICHARD J. POWERS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

A scholarship of $525 is awarded to an outstanding student who is entering third or fourth year of the Political Science program and who has achieved the highest standing in three or more units of International Politics courses.

 

NORMAN J. RUFF SCHOLARSHIP

A scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate student entering their final year in a majors or honours program in Political Science. The recipient will be selected on the basis of excellence in courses first on BC Political Economy or second on BC Governance and who has a wide interest in the study of British Columbia politics.

 

* THE ROBERT LORNE STANFIELD BOOK PRIZES IN POLITICAL SCIENCE

Prizes are awarded to the top students in Canadian Politics courses, particularly Political Science 101 and 201.

 

* JAMES WATTIE MEMORIAL ESSAY SCHOLARSHIP IN INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS

A scholarship is awarded to an academically outstanding 3rd or 4th year student in a Major or Honours program in the Department of Political Science who has written the best essay for a course in the previous academic year on International Relations Theory.

 

* THE WALTER D. YOUNG BOOK PRIZES

Two prizes of $225 each are awarded to the two students registered in first or second year who achieve the highest standing in three units of second year Political Science courses.

 

* THE WALTER D. YOUNG PRIZES

One or more prizes are awarded to the top students in Canadian Politics courses, particularly Political Science 101 and 201. Preference will be given to students in their first or second year.
