Bursaries

  • Students may be considered for the following bursaries by completing the general bursary application. Only one application is necessary to be considered for all bursaries.

 

 

The China Exchange Bursary

Value: $500 | Number: 1

In order to encourage student exchanges between the University of Victoria and East China Normal University, a bursary of $500 will be awarded to a student from the University of Victoria attending the East China Normal University, or to a student from the East China Normal University attending the University of Victoria. Should unforeseen circumstances arise whereby no exchange is possible in a given year, the bursary may be awarded to a University of Victoria student who is enrolled in a program within the Department of Pacific and Asian Studies and who has demonstrated financial need, reasonable academic standing and an interest in the study of China.

There are no In Course Scholarships that require application specific to Pacific and Asian Studies

Applications from students are NOT required for scholarships listed in this section.

Unless otherwise indicated, recipients are selected by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendations of the Department of Pacific and Asian Studies.

These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals and prizes.

Scholarships marked with an asterisk (*) are administered by the University of Victoria Foundation.

 

*THE DR. NORMAN BETHUNE MEMORIAL AWARD

An award is given to a student who has completed at least 3 courses on China and/or Overseas Chinese studies.

 

* THE CHINESE CONSOLIDATED BENEVOLENT ASSOCIATION OF VICTORIA TRAVEL AWARDS

Travel Award:
An award is given to a student who has completed at least 4 coures on China and/or overseas Chinese Studies and who is undertaking a study of Chinatowns outside the City of Victoria. The general University requirement that the award recipient must return to the University of Victoria in the next regular session and enroll in a full program does not apply to this travel award.
Course Award:
An award of $100 is given to a student who has completed at least 3 courses on China and/or Overseas Chinese Studies. This award is made for the purpose of stimulating the study of the Geography of Chinatowns.

 

*THE DART COON CLUB AND CHINESE FREEMASONS OF VICTORIA CHINA STUDIES TRAVEL AWARD

An award is given to a student who has completed at least 4 courses on China and/or Overseas Chinese Studies and who is undertaking a study tour of China. The general University requirement that the award recipient must return to the University of Victoria in the next regular session and enroll in a full program does not apply to this travel award. The purpose of this award is to stimulate the study of geography of China and to provide funds for the organization of a study tour of China.

 

* THE DART COON CLUB OF VICTORIA AWARD

An award of $125 is given to a student who has completed at least 3 courses on China and/or Overseas Chinese Studies. This award is made for the purpose of stimulating the study of the developing countries of the Pacific Rim

 

* THE GREGORY HEITZMANN BOOK PRIZE IN JAPANESE STUDIES

A book prize is awarded to the student who has achieved the highest standing in Japanese Studies courses each Winter Session.

 

* PO TING IP AND WAI TSUEN LEE IP SCHOLARSHIP IN PACIFIC AND ASIAN STUDIES

One or more scholarships are awarded to students continuing in a graduate or undergraduate program in the Department of Pacific and Asian Studies, who have taken a course on classical Chinese tradition. Selection of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Pacific and Asian Studies, or in the case of a graduate award, selection will be made by the Graduate Admissions and Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the Department of Pacific and Asian Studies.

 

* THE MAO TSE-TUNG MEMORIAL AWARDS

Travel Award:
An award is given to a student who has completed at least 4 courses on China and/or Overseas Chinese Studies and who is undertaking a study tour of China. The general University requirement that the award recipient must return to the University of Victoria in the next regular session and enroll in a full program does not apply to this travel award. This award was funded through a bequest from the late Mr. Bill Scott and is awarded in memory of the late Mao Tse-Tung for the purpose of promoting the study of Modern China.
Course Award:
An award of $125 is given to a student who has completed at least 3 courses on China and/or Overseas Chinese Studies. This award was funded through a bequest from the late Mr. Bill Scott and is awarded in memory of the late Mao Tse-Tung for the purpose of promoting the study of Modern China.

 

* DR. DAVID F. STRONG SCHOLARSHIP

A scholarship of at least $2,000 established by the Alumni Association of the University of Victoria is awarded to a student entering third or fourth year of a program in the Department of Pacific and Asian Studies.

 

* WONG FAT-NAN MEMORIAL AWARD

An award is given to a student who has completed at least 3 courses on China and/or Overseas Chinese Studies.

 

* THE PHILIP K.H. WONG SCHOLARSHIP AND AWARD

A scholarship of at least $500 is awarded to a graduate student in a Master's or Ph.D program whose research is related to China or Overseas Chinese Studies. If no graduate student is eligible for this scholarship, an award of $100 may be given to an undergraduate student who has completed at least 3 courses on China and/or Overseas Chinese Studies. If a graduate award, selection will be made by the Graduate Admissions and Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the Department of Pacific and Asian Studies. If an undergraduate award, selection will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Pacific and Asian Studies.
