Bursaries

  • Students may be considered for the following bursaries by completing the general bursary application. Only one application is necessary to be considered for all bursaries.

 

The Angus & Annie Mackay Bursaries

Value: Varies | Number: 2

One or more bursaries are awarded to students entering second, third or fourth year in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Preference is given to students with physical disabilities.

Geraldine Williamson Bursary

Value: Varies | Number: Varies

One or more bursaries are awarded to students in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

 

Scholarships, Medals and Prizes

 

Entrance

 

Requires Entrance Scholarship Application

 

A completed online application is required for Entrance Scholarships listed in this section. The deadline, unless stated otherwise in the Terms of Awards is March 31st. Only one application is necessary to be considered for all Entrance Scholarships.

 

THE EXCELLENCE IN MATH SCHOLARSHIP

One or more scholarships of between $1000 to $4000 are awarded to students entering the University of Victoria directly from secondary schools who have achieved outstanding performance on The Fermat (Grade 11 Mathematics Contest) and/or The Euclid (Grade 12 Mathematics Contest). Contest results must be submitted prior to March 31st or be provided as soon as they become available.

There are no In Course Scholarships that require application specific to Mathematics and Statistics

 

In-Course Scholarship - No Application Required

Applications from students are NOT required for scholarships listed in this section.

Unless otherwise indicated, recipients are selected by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendations of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals and prizes.

Scholarships marked with an asterisk (*) are administered by the University of Victoria Foundation.

 

BOB HARRISON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

A scholarship of $500 is awarded to a third or fourth year student in a major or honours program in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Preference will be given to a student studying calculus.

 

* STEPHEN A. JENNINGS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

One or two scholarships totalling $1950 are awarded to outstanding students entering the third or fourth year of an honours program offered by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Preference will be given to a student who has performed well in the W.L. Putnam competition.

 

* THE BETTY AND GILBERT KENNEDY SCHOLARSHIP IN MATHEMATICS

One or more scholarships are awarded to outstanding students beginning year 3 of an Honours or Major program in Mathematics.

 

* THE ANGUS & ANNIE MACKAY SCHOLARSHIPS

One or more scholarships are awarded to students entering second, third or fourth year in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

 

* THE MARK MITENKO MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

A scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student in Calculus and Physics who is entering second year.

 

* THE MARK E. MOONEY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

A scholarship of $200 is awarded to an outstanding third year student in an Applied Mathematics or a Mathematics and Physics Program.

 

MATHEMATICS AND STATISTICS SCHOLARSHIP

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students in the Honours or combined Honours program in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

 

* B.W. PEARSE SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIPS

Four scholarships are awarded to third or fourth year students in an Honours or Majors program in the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Statistics and Physics and Astronomy.

 

* THE JAMES RIDDELL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

A scholarship is awarded to one or more students entering second year for outstanding performance in Mathematics 101 (Calculus II).

 

SEASPAN INTERNATIONAL LTD. SCHOLARSHIP

A scholarship of $500 is awarded to the student leading courses numbered 200 in any two of the following departments: Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Mathematics and Statistics, Physics. The winner must continue his academic work at an approved university.

 

* THE MARVIN SHINBROT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

A scholarship of $775 is made to an outstanding student beginning the third or fourth year of an Honours program in Mathematics or the Honours Program in Physics and Mathematics.

 

* PAUL SMITH MEMORIAL PRIZE

A prize of $200 is awarded to one or more University of Victoria students performing meritoriously in the William Lowell Putnam Competition.

 

DAVID A. ZALINGER STATISTICS SCHOLARSHIP

A scholarship is awarded to a student who is entering or continuing in a program in Statistics and who has demonstrated the greatest improvement in second year.
