In-Course
- The following award(s) require students to apply directly to the Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies; review the eligibility criteria and application instructions before applying.
* NICHOLAS V. GALICHENKO SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship of at least $1,500 is awarded to an academically outstanding undergraduate student to study Russian language and culture at universities in the countries of the former Soviet Union. Preference will be given to full time students majoring or minoring in Slavic Studies. Students must apply to the Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies by March 31st.
- In-Course Scholarship - No Application Required
Applications from students are NOT required for scholarships listed in this section.
Unless otherwise indicated, recipients are selected by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendations of the Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies.
These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals and prizes.
Scholarships marked with an asterisk (*) are administered by the University of Victoria Foundation.
The following scholarships relate to Germanic Studies:
* HANS AND IMOGEN BACH SCHOLARSHIP
One or more scholarships are awarded to students in an Honours or Major program in Germanic Studies. Preference will be given to students in the Honours program.
* THE GERMAN CLUB SCHOLASTIC AWARD
An award of $63, established by the University of Victoria German Club (1985-86), is made annually to a promising first, second or third year student intending to continue German studies at the University of Victoria.
GOVERNMENT OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY BOOK PRIZES
These book prizes, the gift of the Federal Republic of Germany through the Consulate General in Vancouver, are available for students in each undergraduate year showing proficiency in German studies.
* THE DR. NORA HAIMBERGER SCHOLARSHIPS
Two scholarships are awarded annually. One $450 scholarship is given to an outstanding student entering the fourth year of a Major or Honours program in Germanic Studies. The other ($225) is given to a promising student enrolled in Germanic Studies 100 or 149.
* THE J. BEATTIE MacLEAN SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship of $750 is awarded to a student of outstanding merit and promise in second or third year who intends to continue studies in German at the University of Victoria.
* WALTER RIEDEL SCHOLARSHIP
One scholarship is awarded to a student in the Honours or Major program in Germanic Studies. Preference will be given to students enrolled in at least on course in the Faculty of Fine Arts.
THE PRIZES OF THE AMBASSADOR OF SWITZERLAND TO CANADA
These book prizes will be awarded to an outstanding student of French language and literature, to a student with highstanding in German, and to an outstanding student in Italian.
* THE CARL WEISELBERGER MEMORIAL PRIZE IN GERMAN
A prize is awarded to a promising senior student in German on the recommendation of the Department of Germanic Studies.
UKRAINIAN PROFESSIONAL AND BUSINESS ASSOCIATION PRIZE
A prize of $250 is awarded to the top student in the course offered on Modern Ukraine in the Department of Germanic and Slavic studies. Please note: This course in not offered on a regular basis.
* THE UNIVERSITY OF VICTORIA GERMAN CLUB JUBILEE AWARD
Two awards consisting of a German/English Dictionary will be awarded annually to promising first or second year students intending to continue German studies at the University of Victoria. The award was established by the University of Victoria German Club (1977-78).
*BEATRICE WOODHOUSE SCHOLARSHIP IN RUSSIAN STUDIES
A scholarship of $500 is awarded to an academically oustanding undergraduate student in Russian Studies in the Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies.
The following scholarships relate to Russian Studies:
* THE MICHAEL DANE MEMORIAL BOOK PRIZE IN RUSSIAN
A book prize is given to the top student in first year Russian who proposes to continue the study of Russian for at least one further year at the University.
DAVISON UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP IN GERMANIC AND SLAVIC STUDIES
A scholarship of $1,000 is awarded to an academically outstanding student in Russian studies.
* THE J.B. WOOD BOOK PRIZE IN RUSSIAN
A book prize is given to the top student in first year Russian who proposes to continue the study of Russian for at least one further year at the University.
UKRAINIAN PROFESSIONAL AND BUSINESS ASSOCIATION PRIZE
A prize of $250 is awarded to the top student in the course offered on Modern Ukraine in the Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies.
*UKRAINIAN STUDIES SCHOLARSHIP
One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students enrolled in a course offered on the Ukraine in the Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies or the Department of History.
