STUDENT APPLICATION SCHOLARSHIPS

BRITISH COLUMBIA PARAPLEGIC ASSOCIATION/ROTARY CLUB OF VICTORIA SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship of $1250 will be awarded to a physically disabled student with permanent mobility impairments. Selection of the recipient will be made by a committee composed of a Senate Committee on Awards representative, a Student and Ancillary Services representative and a British Columbia Paraplegic Association representative.
THE L. AND G. BUTLER SCHOLARSHIP FOR THE DISABLED
A scholarship of $650 is awarded on the basis of academic performance to a disabled student attending the University of Victoria. The recipient may be a newly admitted or returning student.
CATHERINE O. CAMERON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship is awarded by the Canadian Federation of University Women Victoria to a female student in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of the Department of Geography. Preference will be given to students who can demonstrate financial need,
THE COLUMBIA COAST MISSION SCHOLARSHIP
One or more scholarships are awarded to students in second, third, fourth or fifth year of a program leading to a first undergraduate degree. Preference will be given to students who have received all or part of elementary or secondary education while residing in the area served by the Columbia Coast Mission. This area includes School Districts 46 (Sunshine Coast), 47 (Powell River), 71 (Comox Valley), 72 (Campbell River), 85 (Vancouver Island North), and Lasqueti Island in School District 69 (Qualicum).
LUCY AND MARGARET CORBET SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship of $525 is awarded to a student who has completed premedical studies at the University of Victoria and is proceeding to medical school in September. Selection of the winner will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards on the basis of sound academic achievement and demonstrated financial need. Candidates must provide written acceptance of their entry into an approved medical school.
THE DR. VALENTINE GUY CRISWICK SCHOLARSHIP
One or more scholarships are awarded to outstanding students who are proceeding to premedical studies at the year 3 or 4 level at the University of Victoria. Applicants must provide details of their plans for future medical school attendance on the application form.
JOHN CARLING FRASER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS
Two scholarships of $2500 each are awarded to 3rd or 4th year students in the Faculty of Science, with a declared major in Biology, Microbiology or Biochemistry. Preference will be given to students who are active in student politics and/or volunteer work with youth groups in the community, especially Scouts Canada. Students should submit a letter or resume as part of their application in which they describe their contributions to such volunteer/youth organizations.
CANDIS GRAHAM WRITING SCHOLARSHIP, LAMBDA FOUNDATION FUND
One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students in the Department of Writing who achieve excellence in writing that demonstrates originality, accessibility, creativity, or impact. Preference will be given to students with community involvement through active membership in a gay or lesbian society or similar community equality-seeking groups.
THE MRS. ANNIE GRESKIW SCHOLARSHIP IN PREMEDICAL STUDIES
Two scholarships of $1650 each are awarded to outstanding students who are proceeding to premedical studies at the year 3 or 4 level at the University of Victoria. Applicants must provide details of their plans for future medical school attendance on the application form.
EDYTHE HEMBROFF-SCHLEICHER SCHOLARSHIPS
One or more scholarships are awarded to undergraduate or graduate female students registered in pre-medicine disciplines, for example Biochemistry and Microbiology, Biology or Chemistry. Preference will be given to students who have stated an intention to continue on to medical school. Selection of the graduate recipients will be made by the Graduate Admissions and Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the appropriate departments. Selection of the undergraduate recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards.
MICHIEL HORN SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship of $2500 is awarded to a 3rd or 4th year Honours History or Honours History/English student. Preference will be given to a student who can demonstrate financial need, applicants should be sure to complete the Budget Sheet included with the Online Application.
THE ALLARDICE LANCASTER SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship is awarded to a student entering the fourth year of an Honours program in the Faculty of Humanities. Academic standing and participation in university and community activities will be considered.
ALLAN AND ELIZABETH MCKINNON SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship is awarded to a senior student of high academic standing engaged in a Major or Honours program in Canadian history who would find it difficult to resume studies without financial aid.
TD INSURANCE MELOCHE MONNEX SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship of $1000 is awarded to a student entering third year, who is a child or grandchild of an alumnus/alumna of the University of Victoria. (Note: an alumnus/alumna is a graduate of a UVic undergraduate, diploma or certificate program.)
THE TOM PERRY AWARD FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
An award of $1050 is awarded annually to a student who has made an exceptional contribution to environmental or humanitarian causes in association with recognized charitable organizations. Students should submit a letter of application in which they describe their contributions to such organizations; provide a summary of their anticipated educational and living expenses for the forthcoming academic year; and indicate who will be furnishing letters of recommendation. Letters of recommendation must be submitted by environmental or humanitarian organizations with designated charity status, and provide evidence that the applicant has demonstrated an exceptionally active involvement in the organization. Applicants must be enrolled in at least nine units of study at the University of Victoria during the year in which they apply, and must have achieved at least a B+ average in that year. Applicants must also show evidence of financial need and should be sure to complete the Budget Sheet included with the Online Application. The recipient must register in a post-secondary institution in the following year. Applications and letters of recommendation must be submitted to Student Awards and Financial Aid by May 31. Selection will be made by Ms. Judith White and a University representative designated by the Chair of the Senate Committtee on Awards in consultation with Ms. White or her estate.
PROFESSIONAL EMPLOYEES ASSOCIATION (PEA) SCHOLARSHIP
One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding full or part-time undergraduate students entering or continuing at the University of Victoria with a GPA of at least 4.0 and who are UVic PEA members or their dependants. Applicants must complete the online application by May 31. Selection of the recipients will be made by the PEA ProD Committee.
THE HELEN RODNEY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship of $850 is awarded to a student who has graduated from the University of Victoria and who is proceeding to a graduate program in Library Science or a related discipline. This award is tenable at a Canadian university. Candidates must provide written evidence of their acceptance to an approved program.
ANDREW SOLES MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS
One or more scholarships are awarded to outstanding students who are registered in a B.A. program at the University of Victoria, and who are or were a resident in the Kootenay region of British Columbia.
THE UNIVERSITY CHALLENGE SCHOLARSHIPS
One or more scholarships to a total of $650 to be awarded from funds won on the CTV Television Program "University Challenge" by Victoria teams. The fund was started in 1971 by a team consisting of Glen Paruk, Robert McDougall, Denis Johnston and Bruce Izard, coached by Professor Alfred Loft. Selection of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards on the basis of outstanding service by the candidate to the community and/or the University and high academic standing.
ELIZABETH (BETTY) VALENTINE PRANGNELL SCHOLARSHIP
Two undergraduate scholarships, one to a female and one to a male, are awarded to academically outstanding First Nations students with an interest in native art in the Department of Visual Arts.
PAMELA VALENTINE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship of $500 is awarded to a mature third year female student at the University of Victoria who has a family or historical link to the Saanich Peninsula.
VICTORIA REAL ESTATE BOARD AWARDS
$1000 awarded as a scholarship to students registered at the University of Victoria who are dependants of members of the Victoria Real Estate Board. Students currently registered at the University of Victoria who find that they must transfer to another university in order to complete their chosen program are eligible to apply for these awards.
DR. DOUGLAS EARL ALCORN SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship is awarded to an academically outstanding student who is pursuing a degree in Psychology and who demonstrates an interest in abnormal psychology, and who has completed at least two years of study at UVic, and who is proceeding to medical school in September. Candidates must provide written acceptance of their entry into an approved medical school.
PAPER/OTHER APPLICATION SCHOLARSHPS
To be considered for the following scholarships please apply as per the instructions indicated in the scholarship descriptions.
GREATER VICTORIA CANADIAN UNION OF PUBLIC EMPLOYEES (CUPE) SCHOLARSHIPS
C.U.P.E. will make available the sum of nine hundred dollars ($900) to provide scholarships for three deserving and promising students at the University of Victoria who are continuing their studies here. The selection will be made on the basis of academic standing. These scholarships are open only to sons and daughters of members of contributing locals of the Canadian Union of Public Employees of the Greater Victoria area. Recipients will be selected by the Committee on Awards in consultation with officials of the C.U.P.E. Scholarship Fund. Application forms available from Student Awards and Financial Aid and must be submitted no later than September 30.
JAMIE CASSELS UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH AWARDS
Awards are given to academically outstanding full time 3rd or 4th year undergraduate students who are working directly with a faculty member on a research project. Students registered in their final year of study are eligible for scholarships at a reduced courseload if they require less than 12 units of coursework to complete their degree. Normally, eligible students must have attained a minimum GPA of 7.0 in 12 units over at least two academic terms in the 12 month period immediately preceding the adjudication. Award recipients will be nominated by the research project supervisor and the Chair/Director of the appropriate academic unit or program. * JOHN MICHEAL BROWNUTT SCHOLARSHIPS
One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate Aboriginal (First Nation Status, Non-Status, Inuit or Métis) students at the University of Victoria. Students must have demonstrated community involvement. Applications may be obtained from the Office of Indigenous Affairs and must be submitted to that office by July 15th.
LANGFORD-SEABOURNE SCHOLARSHIP
One or more scholarships are awarded to full-time or part- time Snuneymuxw First Nations students with the highest GPA entering or continuing in the Masters of Public Administration program. In the event there is no such candidate, preference will be given to a Snuneymuxw student in any graduate program at the University of Victoria. If no Snuneymuxw graduate student is found, the scholarship will be awarded to a Snuneymuxw student entering or continuing in any undergraduate program. Selection of the graduate recipient will be made by the Graduate Admissions and Awards Committee. Selection of the undergraduate student will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards. Application forms are available for graduate students entering the University of Victoria from the Faculty of Graduate Studies and must be submitted not later than February 15th. Application forms are available for graduate students continuing at the University of Victoria from the Faculty of Graduate Studies and must be submitted not later than September 15th. Application forms are available for undergraduate students from Student Awards and Financial Aid and must be submitted not later than September 15.
PETER LIDDELL AWARD IN HUMANITIES COMPUTING
One or more awards are given to undergraduate students in the Faculty of Humanities who have completed a single humanities computing project that makes a significant creative or innovative contribution. Nomination forms may be obtained from the Office of the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and must be submitted to that office by March 30th.Selection will be determined by the Dean of the aculty of Humanities. This award may be awarded to a graduating student.
GAVIN QUINEY RESIDENCE LIFE LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP
One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students who currently reside in a residence life facility and have made a significant contribution to the quality of residence life at the University of Victoria. The scholarship recognizes a student(s) who has gone above and beyond normal expectations, contributing significantly through a body of work and/or specific outstanding achievements as a residence life student leader. Award recipients will be selected by the Director, Resident Services. Applications are available from Housing, Food and Conference Services Office. The deadline for submitting applications is April 30.
THE SENATOR WILLIAM JOHN MACDONALD TRAVELLING SCHOLARSHIP
(Next competition Fall 2014 to undertake graduate studies in 2015)
This scholarship was established by Mrs. T.G. Keir in memory of her grandfather, Senator MacDonald. The scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student who has received an undergraduate degree from the University of Victoria since the last competition and who is planning to undertake a graduate degree in Arts, Science or Fine Arts at a Scottish university. If there are no suitable candidates wishing to study at a Scottish university then applicants wishing to attend any United Kingdom university will be considered. The scholarship will have a value of $25,000. Application packages are available from Student Awards and Financial Aid. The application package includes three referee forms to be completed by individuals who are familiar with the applicant's work. The application form and the referee forms must all be submitted by October 29, 2010. The selection of the recipient will be made by a Committee, appointed by the President, which is composed of a Dean of one of the Faculties, an individual of professional rank and the Chair of the Senate Committee on Awards. Decisions reached by the Committee are final. Scholarship assignments are made after the results of the final examinations for the relevant Winter Session have been determined.
GRADE POINT AVERAGE (GPA) SCHOLARSHIPS
Students are not required to apply for the following scholarships; recipients are chosen according to academic standing and/or fulfillment of other specific criteria and/or departmental recommendation.
THE J. ALAN BAKER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship of $250 is awarded to a deserving and promising student in an Honours program who is continuing into third or fourth year at the University of Victoria.
THE BRITISH COLUMBIA 1958 CENTENNIAL SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship of $875 is awarded to a student who has completed at least one year at the University of Victoria and who is continuing University studies in the Province of British Columbia.
THE JAMES R. BULLICK MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS
Two scholarships of $1562 each are awarded to outstanding students entering one of the final two years of undergraduate studies. One scholarship will be awarded in the Faculty of Engineering and one in the Faculty of Social Sciences.
R.G., I.M. & Y.H.K CARLEY SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship of $450 is awarded annually to a student with high academic standing.
MARY HANNAH COOPER SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship of $575 is awarded to a worthy and deserving student.
MATTHEW COWAN ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship of $250 is awarded to a promising student with high academic standing. The winner must continue at the
University of Victoria.
DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship is awarded to a student in an area of study designated by the Distinguished Alumni Award winner. Selection of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the designated Department.
PERCY H. ELLIOTT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship of $425 is awarded to a student of outstanding merit and promise in one specific field of study, who also has a high general academic standing and qualities of character indicating worthiness to hold the scholarship. The scholarship is awarded, upon the recommendation of the Senate Committee on Awards, to a student in the first or second year, proceeding immediately towards a degree.
THE ROBERT S. EVANS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS
Scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding students who intend to continue their studies at the University of Victoria as follows:
a. One scholarship to a student in each of the programs: Child and Youth Care, Nursing and Social Work, on the recommendation of the respective Directors;
b. One scholarship to a student who has completed the qualifying 300-level courses for an Honours or Major program in Astronomy;
c. Two scholarships for award within the student body at large. If no suitable candidates can be found in categories (a) or (b), additional awards can be made in category (c).
DR. ESME FOORD SCHOLARSHIIP
One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students at the University of Victoria.
GENERAL UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS
One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students entering or continuing at the University of Victoria.
THE FRANK AND MARGARET GIBBS SCHOLARSHIPS
One or more scholarships are awarded to students continuing in the Faculties of Engineering, Humanities, Social Sciences, Science, Fine Arts and Education.
THE NELLIE GILLESPIE PRIZE
A prize of $175 is awarded to the student who upon graduation with a bachelor's degree stands at the head of the graduating class on the basis of the graduating average.
MELVA J. HANSON SCHOLARSHIP
One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students at the University of Victoria.
ALBERT HUNG CHAO HONG SCHOLARSHIP
One or more scholarships of varying values based on academic excellence are awarded to undergraduate and graduate students attending the University of Victoria who are citizens of Hong Kong or Mainland China.
ISLANDS WEST SCHOLARSHIP
One or more scholarships are awarded to students entering or continuing at the University of Victoria.
THE HAZEL T. KNOX MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
One or more scholarships are awarded annually to deserving and promising students in an honours program and continuing into the third or fourth year at the University of Victoria. If funds permit, additional awards of a similar nature will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards.
ALEXANDER AND HELEN STAFFORD MACCARTHY MUIR SCHOLARSHIP
One or more scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic excellence to undergraduate students at the University of Victoria.
THE JESS WALLACE MUNROE SCHOLARSHIP
One or more scholarships will be awarded annually to students with high academic standing.
THE HOWARD PETCH SCHOLARSHIPS
Nine scholarships are awarded to the students entering second, third, fourth or fifth year who achieve the highest academic standing in each of the Faculties of Business, Education, Engineering, Human and Social Development, Fine Arts, Law, Humanities, Science, and Social Sciences. The measure of academic standing will be grade point average on a full time course load (normally 12 units) taken in the preceding two academic terms. In the event of a tie, the scholarship will be shared. The amount of each scholarship will be $3,500 or the lesser amount required to place the recipient at a total amount of $5,000 (or a total amount of $10,000 for the Faculty of Law).
THE PRATT-SHORT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Five hundred dollars ($500) awarded annually to a student with broad interests completing second year.
THE PRESIDENTS SCHOLARSHIPS
Scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students in all faculties. Recipients must be registered in a total of 12 or more units of study in two academic terms in the 12 month period (May to April) immediately preceding the adjudication of awards. Co-op students who have completed only one academic term of 6 or more units and at least one work term in the previous 12 months period (May to April) will be considered for this scholarship.
THE EDWARD J. SAVANNAH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship of $650, subscribed by his friends and former students, is awarded to students proceeding to third year science at the University of Victoria or elsewhere.
JARMILA VLAST VON DRAK THOUVENELLE CO-OP SCHOLARSHIPS
One or more scholarships are awarded to undergraduate and graduate co-op students at the University of Victoria. Upon the recommendation of the Office of the Co-operative Education Programme, undergraduate student selection will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards and in the case of graduate students, selection will be made by the Graduate Admissions and Awards Committee.
THE UNIVERSITY OF VICTORIA ALUMNI ASSOCIATION UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS
Scholarships of $2000 each are awarded to students entering one of the final two years of undergraduate studies at the University of Victoria. Students may receive this award only once.
THE UNIVERSITY OF VICTORIA FACULTY SCHOLARSHIPS
Approximately 60 scholarships of $500 are awarded annually on the basis of academic standing. The fund for these awards was established by donations of University of Victoria faculty members and professional librarians.
THE UNIVERSITY OF VICTORIA FACULTY ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIPS
Three scholarships, of seven hundred dollars ($700) each, to be awarded annually to further the education of students of good academic standing.
THE ROBERT AND NORAH WALLACE COMMEMORATIVE SCHOLARSHIP
Five scholarships, one each in the Faculties of Education, Fine Arts, Human and Social Development, Humanities and Science, are awarded to outstanding students entering one of the final two years of undergraduate studies.
THE WESTAD SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship of $475 is awarded to a deserving student completing first or second year and continuing University studies.
CLARA EVELYN WILSON SCHOLARSHIP
One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students entering or continuing at the University of Victoria.
THE WOODS TRUST SCHOLARSHIP
Awarded to promising students at the University of Victoria who intend to pursue studies as undergraduates at the university or as postgraduate students at other universities or educational institutions or at any industrial or commercial concern engaged in the field of electrical engineering or in any allied field in the physical sciences.
BOB WRIGHT SCHOLARSHIPS
One or more scholarships are awarded to outstanding undergraduate students in the Faculty of Science who have demonstrated an interest in oceans through course work, co-op experience or work experience.
THE MR. & MRS. JOHN L. WYATT PRICE SCHOLARSHIPS
One or more scholarships are awarded to students attending the University of Victoria. Selection of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards.
