General Bursaries

The following is a list of bursaries which are not specific to any department.

To be eligible for these bursaries students must be receiving maximum government student loans and still have unmet financial need. Only one application is necessary to be considered for all bursaries. General bursary application

EDITH LLOYD BAKER BURSARY

One bursaries are awarded to students entering or continuing to attend the University of Victoria.

SUTRO BANCROFT BURSARY

A bursary of $500 will be awarded to a deserving and promising student continuing studies at the University of Victoria.

BETA SIGMA PHI SORORITY ELIZABETH FORBES BURSARY

Value: $200 | Number: 1

An award of $200 to be awarded annually to a promising and deserving woman entering third or fourth year Arts and Science or Education at the University of Victoria.

THE BEVAN BURSARY

Value: $600 total | Number: 1 or 2

One or two bursaries totalling $600, will be awarded annually to a student(s) who is severely disabled by either deafness, blindness, or arthritis, or is otherwise seriously handicapped, and who is beginning or continuing studies at the University of Victoria. If no such student applies, the award may be given to any needy student. This bursary was established by Mrs. Ivy B. (Pat) Bevan in memory of her late husband, Albert S. (Bert) Bevan.

THE PAT BEVAN WOMEN'S BURSARY

One or more bursaries are awarded to mature women students in the Division of Humanities. Preference will be given to residents of British Columbia. Note: Mature is defined as 23 years of age or older.

THE THEODORE BIEBERDORF BURSARY

One or more bursaries are awarded to students who are continuing studies at the University of Victoria.

THE BIRKS FAMILY BURSARIES

The Birks Family Foundation has established a plan of annual contributions to the Student Aid Fund of recognized Canadian Universities for the creation of the Birks Family Foundation Bursaries. The Bursaries are awarded by the Foundation on the recommendation of the University and are not restricted to the faculty or year and may be renewed. The number and amount of such awards may vary annually, depending upon the funds available for this purpose from the foundation.

ROSY AND STEVEN CHAN MEMORIAL BURSARY

One or more bursaries are awarded to students of minority ancestral groups entering or continuing at the University of Victoria. Preference will be given to students of Aboriginal or Asian ancestry.

MARGARET T. CLINCH BURSARIES

Bursaries in the sum of tuition for two academic terms are awarded to students entering the University of Victoria from British Columbia secondary schools or colleges. One half of the bursaries are to be allocated to students entering from Greater Victoria School District #61, Sooke School District #62, Saanich School District #63, or from Camosun College and the other half to students from other areas in British Columbia.

CLOVERDALE PAINT BURSARY

A bursary is awarded to an entering or returning student whose familiy is a resident of British Columbia or Alberta, and who has entrepreneurial objectives and demonstrated community service. Preference will be given to a student related to an employee or Cloverdale Paint Inc.

THE THOMAS HENRY (HARRY) AND DORIS COLLOM BURSARY

Three or more bursaries will be awarded to students entering second or third year in music. If there are insufficient qualified music students, bursaries will be awarded to second or third year science students. Preference will be given to students born in British Columbia or the United Kingdom.

JOAN DUBEAU CROUCH MEMORIAL BURSARY

One or more bursaries are awarded to single-parent students in an honours or major program in the Faculty of Social Science, Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Fine Arts.

MICHAEL CROWE/VFA BRITISH COLUMBIA BURSARY

One or more bursaries are awarded to undergraduate students at the University of Victoria. Preference will be given to students who have a parent or grandparent who is a member of the Volunteer Firefighter’s Association of British Columbia (VFABritish Columbia). If there are no undergraduate students eligible, then it may be awarded to graduate students. Members of the Association may also be eligible if there are no eligible children.

THE CURRY BURSARY

A bursary is awarded to a single mother entering or continuing at the University of Victoria.

THE GORDON CUTHBERT MEMORIAL BURSARY

Value: $100 | Number: 1

A bursary of $100 will be awarded annually, in memory of James Gordon Cuthbert, who was a lifetime advocate of higher education. The award will be made to a student, on the basis of academic achievement and financial need, who has completed pre-medical studies at the University of Victoria and is proceeding to medical school the following September.

ESTROFEST/FURTADO BURSARY

A bursary is awarded to a student registered in at least one 200 level Women's Studies course. The recipient must also have completed at least one other Women's Studies course at UVic.

FACULTY ASSOCIATION BURSARIES

One or more bursaries of $2,000 each are awarded to single parents, students with a disability or First Nations students.

ELSA ELEONORA FAGERBERG & CLARA MARIA FAGERBERG ENTRANCE BURSARIES

Bursaries are awarded to students entering undergraduate programs from secondary schools in Canada. To receive bursary renewals, recipients must submit a bursary application and continue to demonstrate financial need.

One or more awards are made to students in any undergraduate discipline entering their graduating year who demonstrate a need for financial assistance. Preference will be given to students with family responsibilities whose permanent residence is outside of Greater Victoria. The awards are made available through the donation of the 1984 Graduating Class to commemorate the twenty-first birthday of the University of Victoria.

FRANC JOUBIN ENTRANCE BURSARIES

Bursaries are awarded in memory of Professor Walter Gage to students entering the University of Victoria from Secondary Schools.

THE JUBILEE YEAR GRADUATING CLASS BURSARY FUND

A bursary valued $300 will be awarded annually to a student enrolling in the graduating year and carrying a full course load. Students with an academic standing of second class or better will be considered if they demonstrate genuine need. The award is made available through the generous donations of graduating classes at the University. The 1978 Graduating Class made a significant contribution to commemorate 75 years of higher education in Victoria.

THE CHARLES CHAN KENT GOLDEN WEDDING ANNIVERSARY BURSARY

A bursary of $500, the gift of the Charles Chan Kent Foundation, is offered to students who are proceeding to a degree in any field, having successfully completed at least one year at the University of Victoria and in need of financial assistance. The bursary will be awarded to a student of Chinese extraction.

KIWANIS CLUB OF VICTORIA BURSARY

A bursary of $500 is awarded to a student entering the second year of studies at the University of Victoria.

HAZEL T. KNOX MEMORIAL BURSARY

One or more bursaries are awarded annually to students enrolled in an honours program and continuing into the third or fourth year at the University of Victoria.

THE MARGARET LAURIE BURSARY

One or more bursaries are awarded to students currently enrolled at the University of Victoria. Preference will be given to students of Chinese ancestry.

THE DR. DOUGLAS H. TAYLOR LEE MEMORIAL BURSARY

Value: $450 | Number: 1

$450 awarded annually to a second or third year student planning a career in medicine with overriding preference given to a female student with first class honours standing. The applicant must be studying in the general area of basic medical sciences, on a pre-medicine program.

MARC ASHLEY LEVESQUE MEMORIAL BURSARY

A bursary of $100 is awarded to a student entering a Bachelor of Science program.

SARA AND JEAN MACDONALD BURSARY FUND

This fund provides five bursaries valued at $450 each for worthy and deserving women students entering the University of Victoria from secondary schools.

DR. IAN MACPHERSON BURSARY

A bursary is awarded on alternate years to an undergraduate or graduate student with an interest in Co-operative Studies. The student must submit, with their application, a 150-300 word description of how he or she is undertaking the studies into co-operatives or co-operative thought. Students must return their applications by October 15. Preference will be given to a member or the child of a member of the Peninsula Consumer Services Cooperative.

MINERVA FOUNDATION BURSARY

A bursary of $10,000 is awarded to a female single parent at the University of Victoria. This bursary may be awarded to a student for more than one year providing they reapply each year, demonstrate financial need and maintain satisfactory academic standing.

JOAN MURPHY MEMORIAL BURSARY

One or more bursaries are awarded to students entering second or third year who have contributed significantly to the affairs of the University of Victoria Young Liberals Club.

THE NATIVE DAUGHTERS OF BRITISH COLUMBIA BURSARY

DONNA NICKEL MEMORIAL BURSARY

To honour the memory of Mrs. Donna J. Nickel of Penticton, a bursary will be awarded to a student continuing studies at the University of Victoria, with preference to British Columbia residents.

NELLIE PERRY BURSARY

One or more bursaries are awarded to students entering or continuing at the University of Victoria. Preference will be given to mature students.

THE STEVE PETERSON MEMORIAL BURSARY IN MEDICINE

Value: $400 | Number: 1

A bursary of at least $400 will be awarded annually to a needy student following a pre-medicine program at the University of Victoria who has a strong academic record and has demonstrated interest in a career in medicine.

JEAN PORTER BURSARY

One or more bursaries are awarded to undergraduate or graduate disabled students who are either hearing or visually impaired.

PROFESSIONAL STAFF ASSOCIATION (PSA) BURSARY FOR PART-TIME STUDENTS

Established in 1997 by the Professional Staff Association, this bursary is open to students enrolled in part-time studies for credit at the University of Victoria who can demonstrate financial need.

THE WILF SADLER MEMORIAL BURSARY FUND

A bursary of $500 will be allocated annual to a needy student from the Greater Victoria area who is entering the University from the secondary school system. Preference will be given to students who can demonstrate significant involvement in amateur sports.

One or more bursaries are awarded to students entering or continuing in any program of study at the University of Victoria.

SINCLAIR LIFE SCIENCES BURSARY

One or more bursaries are awarded to continuing undergraduate students in Honours or Major Programs in the life sciences who best combine scholarship with financial need. Applicants need not be primarily registered in the Faculty of Science, but must submit an application which briefly describes their involvement in the study of life sciences. Awards will be made on the recommendation of the faculties in which the applicants are registered.

THE UNIVERSITY OF VICTORIA BURSARIES

THE UNIVERSITY OF VICTORIA FACULTY BURSARIES

Approximately 25 bursaries of $500 are awarded annually on the basis of financial need and reasonable academic standing. The fund for these awards was established by donations of the University of Victoria faculty members and professional librarians.

THE UNIVERSITY WOMEN'S CLUB OF VICTORIA RECENT GRADS BURSARY

A bursary of $850 is awarded annually to a female student whose education was interrupted for five years or more and who is returning to studies toward a first degree in any faculty at the University of Victoria.

VANCOUVER FOUNDATION FIRST NATIONS BURSARY

THE VICTORIA CENTRAL LIONS CLUB MEMORIAL BURSARIES

THE VICTORIA COLLEGE CRAIGDARROCH CASTLE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION BURSARY

A number of bursaries will be awarded annually on the basis of financial need and academic performance to undergraduates who have completed at least one year in the Faculty of Arts and Science and are working towards a B.A., B.Sc., or B.Ed. degree. Recipients must be residents of British Columbia.

THE VICTORIA REAL ESTATE BOARD BURSARY

$1,000 awarded annually as a scholarship and $1,000 awarded annually as a bursary to students registered at the University of Victoria who are dependants of members of the Victoria Real Estate Board. Students registered at the University of Victoria who find that they must transfer to another university in order to complete their chosen program are eligible to apply for these awards.

THE WEBER MEMORIAL BURSARY

A bursary of $150 to be awarded annually in memory of Mr. and Mrs. E. Weber, to the most deserving student in the third year. Academic standing, citizenship and need are all to be taken into consideration.

G.H. WHEATON BURSARY

A bursary of $1000 is awarded to a student at the University of Victoria.

JOYCE WILKINSON BURSARY

A bursary is awarded to a female student, born in British Columbia, entering or continuing in a program of study in English, History, Theatre or any program in the Faculty of Science.

THE CHRISTOPHER E. WILKS BURSARY FUND

This fund was established by Mr. Harry Wilks in memory of his beloved son, Christopher, who died accidentally in December, 1974. The purpose of the fund is to financially assist deserving students to pursue an academic career who otherwise may be forced to postpone or discontinue their studies. All undergraduate students attending the University of Victoria who can demonstrate need may apply for assistance. Should circumstances arise where more students apply for assistance than available funds will cover, the decision as to which students will receive assistance will be governed by the areas of study, with preference given to studies in the Humanities. If their financial circumstances continue to warrant such assistance, bursaries may be granted to the same students in subsequent years while attending the University of Victoria.
