Bursaries
- Students may be considered for the following bursaries by completing the general bursary application. Only one application is necessary to be considered for all bursaries.
The Major Keith W.A. MacDougall Memorial Bursary
Value: $250 | Number: 1
A bursary of $250 will be awarded annually to a deserving undergraduate student in need of assistance who is majoring in French and who is interested in continuing studies in the field.

Departmental Application
The following award(s) require students to apply directly to the Department; review the eligibility criteria and application instructions before applying.
* THE GRACE AND HARRY HICKMAN SCHOLARSHIP
One scholarship of $4250 will be awarded to assist a student to study French at a university in France. Applicants must be registered in a full time program, including at least one course in French, at the University of Victoria, and intend to study at an appropriate French institution for one year and to return to the University of Victoria to complete the program requirements; preference will be given to a first or second year student. The scholarship will be paid upon receipt of documents demonstrating the student's registration at an acceptable institution. Selection of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards on the recommendation of the Department of French. Written applications, including details of the proposed program, are to be submitted to the Department of French by April 1 of the academic year preceding the proposed study at another institution.
Scholarships Where No Application Is Required
Applications from students are NOT required for scholarships listed in this section.
Unless otherwise indicated, recipients are selected by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendations of the Department of French.
These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals and prizes.
Scholarships marked with an asterisk (*) are administered by the University of Victoria Foundation.
ALLIANCE FRANÇAISE SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship of $300 is awarded to a third year student specializing in French.
* L'ALLIANCE FRANÇAISE DE VICTORIA BOOK PRIZE IN MEMORY OF DR. W.D. WITHERSPOON
A book prize is awarded to a student graduating with a Major in French. The prize is made possible through donations from members of the Alliance Francaise de Victoria.
* THE ADELINE JULIENNE DELOUME MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS
One or more scholarships of $300 each are awarded to the first year female student and the first year male student attaining the highest grades in French in first year university and intending to continue studies in French at the University of Victoria. Additional awards will be presented to students in the Honours and Major Programs, up to a total of $3600.
THE FRENCH GOVERNMENT BOOK PRIZES
These prizes, the gift of the French government through the consulate in Vancouver, are awarded annually for excellence in French.
THE CONSTANCE ANN PETTIT SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship of $500 is awarded to a student entering third or fourth year in a minor, major or honours programme in
French.
* THE MADAME SANDERSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship of $225 is awarded to a promising student for excellence in English and French of the second year.
* THE MADAME BERANGERE STEEL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship is awarded to a student of high academic standing in the second year French composition courses who is
proceeding towards a major or honours degree in French.
THE PRIZES OF THE AMBASSADOR OF SWITZERLAND TO CANADA
These book prizes will be awarded to an outstanding student of French language and literature, to a student with high
standing in German, and to an outstanding student in Italian.
* THE KATHARINE YOUDALL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship of $850 is awarded by the Canadian Federation of University Women Victoria to an outstanding female student entering the third or fourth year of a Major or Honours program in French.
