Bursaries
- Students may be considered for the following bursaries by completing the general bursary application. Only one application is necessary to be considered for all bursaries.
Eco-System Bursary
Value: $375 | Number: 1
A bursary of $375 is awarded annually to an undergraduate student with at least third year standing who is pursuing a major or minor degree in Environmental Studies.
Environmental Studies Bursaries
Value: $1,000 | Number: Varies
One or more bursaries of at least $1,000 each are awarded to students majoring in the School of Environmental Studies.
John Sherwood Bursary
Value: Varies | Number: Varies
One or more bursaries are awarded to students entering or continuing in the Environmental Studies Program. Preference is given to students from Okanagan Valley School Districts 22, 23, 53, 67, and 83, and to students from Okanagan University College.
Maureen Wayne Memorial Bursary
Value: Varies | Number: varies
One or more bursaries are awarded to students in the School of Environmental Studies who are in a major or honours programme. Preference will be given to students working on, or with an interest in, wetlands, estuaries and coastal areas, and in the restoration of ecosystems at the University of Victoria.

Awards Requiring A Departmental Application
Apply directly to the department to be considered for the following scholarships. Review the eligibility and application instructions for each of the awards below
All Environmental Studies applications must be submitted to the School of Environmental Studies by April 30.
* NORAH AND CALVIN BANKS ABORIGINAL LEADERSHIP AWARD IN THE SCIENCES
One or more awards are given to undergraduate or graduate Aboriginal students in the Faculty of Science, Faculty of Engineering or School of Environmental Studies who demonstrate leadership by encouraging and/or promoting Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields of study in Aboriginal communities. Applications may be obtained from the Office of Indigenous Affairs and must be submitted to that office by April 15th together with reference letters from Aboriginal Community leaders outlining how they demonstrate leadership. Selection of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards or the Graduate Admissions and Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the Director of the Office of Indigenous Affairs in consultation with the Dean of the Faculty of Science, and the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and the Director of the School of Environmental Studies.
STEPHEN CANNING MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP*
One or more scholarships are awarded to students who have achieved academic excellence and are entering 3rd or 4th year of a declared major in Environmental Studies or Writing or to students in the Restoration of Natural Systems Diploma program. A letter of application must be submitted to the School of Environmental Studies by April 30th illustrating a record of service and commitment to nature as well as a passion for communicating these interests and values.
DAIRYLAND SCHOLARSHIPS IN ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES
Three scholarships of $750 each are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students in a majors program in Environmental Studies in each of the following: Political Ecology, Ethnoecology and Ecological Restoration.
One scholarship of $750 is awarded to an academically outstanding undergraduate student in a declared Major or Minor program in Environmental Studies. Preference will be given to a First Nations student. Applications can be obtained from the School of Environmental Studies and returned to them by April 30th.
THE VICKI HUSBAND SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship of $1,000 is awarded to a student in a major/minor program in the School of Environmental Studies and who has a record of outstanding contributions to the volunteer sector of environmental work. A letter of recommendation must be submitted by an organization providing evidence that the applicant has demonstrated exceptional contributions to environmental work as a volunteer. Selection is made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the School of Environmental Studies.
* DERRICK & GWEN MALLARD SCHOLARSHIP IN ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
A scholarship of $1,000 is awarded to a student in a major/minor program in Environmental Studies with a record of contribution to the protection of the environment.
VANCOUVER ISLAND TRAILS INFORMATION SOCIETY SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship of $500 is awarded to an academically outstanding 3rd or 4th year undergraduate student, in a declared Major or Minor program in Environmental Studies, who has completed ES 470, Advanced Field Study, the previous summer term. Applicants must submit a one page letter outlining how the material and teachings from ES 470 will assist in their future careers. This letter must be received by the School of Environmental Studies by September 30th. This scholarship may be awarded to a graduating student.
Awards Where No Application Is Required
Applications from students are NOT required for scholarships listed in this section.
Unless otherwise indicated, recipients are selected by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendations of the School of Environmental Studies.
These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals and prizes.
Scholarships marked with an asterisk (*) are administered by the University of Victoria Foundation.
MATTHEW CARDIN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship is awarded to a student who is beginning his or her final project in the Restoration of Natural Systems program. Preference will be given to those who plan a career in freshwater restoration.
RHYS ALEXANDER DAVIS SCHOLARSHIP IN ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES
One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students in the School of Environmental Studies
