Bursaries

  • Students may be considered for the following bursaries by completing the general bursary application. Only one application is necessary to be considered for all bursaries.

 

English Faculty Bursary

Value: $500 | Number: Varies

One or more bursaries of $500 each are awarded to students in the Department of English taking 6.0 to 13.5 units.

 

Ethel Dent Banks & Margaret Maunsell Bursary

Value: Varies | Number: 1

A bursary is awarded to a female student continuing in either the Department of English or the Department of Writing.

 

Maja’s Fund

Value: $2000 | Number: 1

A bursary of $2000 is awarded to a student entering 4th year in a major or honours program in the Department of English. Preference will be given to a student with a GPA of 7.

The Gerald Spencer ("AB") & Marion Kent Bursary in English


Value: Varies | Number: 1

A bursary is awarded to a student proceeding to third or fourth year, who has completed a course in the English Department related to the history of the English language.

MAJA'S FUND (Award)

A prize of $300 is awarded to an undergraduate student who writes the best 1500 word essay on the works of James Joyce. Essays are to be submitted to the Department of English by April 30th.

 

  • In-Course Scholarship - No Application Required

 

Applications from students are NOT required for scholarships listed in this section.

Unless otherwise indicated, recipients are selected by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendations of the Department of English.

These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals and prizes.

Scholarships marked with an asterisk (*) are administered by the University of Victoria Foundation.

 

* THE RALPH BARBOUR BURRY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS

Two scholarships of $1050 each are awarded for excellence in English studies to students entering the third or fourth year in an English Major or Honours program. In cases of comparable academic merit, contributions to university and/or community activities and financial need will be considered.

 

* THE EDGAR FERRAR CORBET SCHOLARSHIP

Three scholarships of $225 are awarded for proficiency in English to a second year student who is a graduate of a British Columbia high school and who will be majoring or honouring in English in the third year.

 

DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH MEDAL FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

A medal is awarded to the graduating student in a Majors or Honours English program who has achieved the highest cumulative grade point average in senior English courses.

 

* DR. BURTON O. KURTH SCHOLARSHIP FOR EXCELLENCE IN ENGLISH HONOURS

A scholarship is awarded to an academically outstanding undergraduate student graduating in the English Honours Program who has achieved the highest cumulative grade point average in senior level English courses.

 

*PAT KOSTER ESSAY SCHOLARSHIP IN WOMEN'S WRITING, 1660-1900

A scholarship of $500 is awarded to an academically outstanding student proceeding to third or fourth year of an English Major or Honours program who has written the best essay on women's writing during the period 1660-1900.

 

* THE IRENE LEE SCHOLARSHIP IN ENGLISH

A scholarship of $325 is awarded to an outstanding student proceeding to year 3 or 4 of a Major or Honours program in the Department of English.

 

MAJA'S FUND

A prize of $300 is awarded to an undergraduate student who writes the best 1500 word essay on the works of James Joyce. Essays are to be submitted to the Department of English by April 30th.

 

* MARTLET CHAPTER IODE CUTHBERT HOLMES ENGLISH HONOURS ESSAY SCHOLARSHIP

A scholarship to the value of $375 is awarded to the student who has written the best English Honours graduating essay.

* GRANT MCORMOND SCHOLARSHIP IN ENGLISH

One or more scholarships are awarded to third year students in the Department of English. Preference will be given to students studying Romantic Period Poets.

 

* P.E.O., CHAPTER 'N' MEMORIAL PRIZE

A prize of $275 is awarded by Chapter N, P.E.O. Sisterhood, to a woman student in first year for excellence in English.

 

* THE JOHN PETER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

A scholarship of $575 is awarded for excellence in English studies to a student in English 310 who is entering the third year of a Major or Honours program in English.

 

* THE PURVES-CORDONIER PRIZE

A prize is awarded to an undergraduate student demonstrating high academic achievement in the field of 17th and 18th Century English Literature.

 

ROYAL BRIDE CHAPTER IODE SCHOLARSHIP

A scholarship is awarded to students who have comleted a first year English course.

 

* ROYAL INSTITUTION AND FRANK EATON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

A scholarship of $175 is awarded to the student taking the highest standing in English of the second year.

 

* THE MADAME SANDERSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

A scholarship of $225 is awarded to a promising student for excellence in English and French of the second year.

 

* THE KATE POTTINGER THOMPSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

A scholarship of $150 is awarded to the Major or Honours student in English with the best overall performance in the third year.
